We applied to the Family Holiday Association for an educational day out for the families we support.
We had originally planned to go to Betteshanger Park – an old colliery site where families can take part in activities and have fun together – but, due uncertainties about the future of this venue, we decided instead to go to Brockhill Country Park.
In total, 47 people took part: 13 families, consisting of 18 adults and 22 children, and 7 Home-Start Shepway staff, volunteers and committee members
Children of all ages from babies to 11 years were offered opportunities to join in various activities with their parents.
The shelter-building showed families how to engage in team work, take turns, learn new skills and make friends. Children sat and listened whilst Nina, KCC Ranger, patiently explained all about safety and each had a turn of using a flint to create a spark. Once the fire was alight they all took turns to toast and eat marshmallows – with care, as they were hot!
All the children had fun crawling and climbing over fallen trees. Paper and crayons were handed out to children for brass rubbings.
After the planned activities families were free to explore and go where they wanted to within the Country Park, however most of them decided to stay with us as a group. We all sat and had lunch together, which was lovely, and we did some old fashioned “chatting” whilst the children had the freedom to run and play in a safe environment.
The children were all given a pencil case with a pen and rubber from the Country Park to remind them of their day out.
It is a trip we would love to repeat with our families – the variety of activities on offer make it possible to show families new ways to learn and have fun together and it is not dependent on the weather, which can so often spoil planned days out.
Comments from parents:
