What is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week?
Every year, Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week shines a vital spotlight on the mental health challenges that women face before, during, and after pregnancy. It’s a week-long campaign that encourages open, honest conversations about a topic that affects far more families than many people realise.
At Home-Start Shepway, we see first-hand how perinatal mental health problems can impact the whole family. From anxiety and depression during pregnancy to the overwhelming feelings that can follow the birth of a baby, these are real struggles that deserve real support — and that’s exactly what this awareness week is all about.
Why Black Maternal Mental Health Matters
While maternal mental health affects women of all backgrounds, research consistently shows that Black women face significant disparities in maternal healthcare outcomes. Black women in the UK are almost four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications, and they are also less likely to be referred for mental health support or have their concerns taken seriously by healthcare professionals.
Black Maternal Mental Health Week exists to address these inequalities head-on, amplifying the voices of Black mothers and demanding better care, better listening, and better outcomes for all.

What the Week Is All About
The campaign focuses on four important goals:
Raising public and professional awareness — Making sure that healthcare providers, employers, friends and family understand the reality of perinatal mental health problems and can spot the signs early
Advocating for women and families — Speaking up for those who may not feel heard, challenging the systems that too often fail mothers from marginalised backgrounds
Changing attitudes — Breaking down the stigma around mental health, particularly within communities where it can be harder to talk openly about these struggles
Helping people access support — Ensuring families know what help is available and how to reach it, because no one should have to struggle alone
How Home-Start Shepway Can Help
At Home-Start Shepway, we understand that becoming a parent is one of life’s biggest transitions — and it doesn’t always feel like the joyful experience others expect it to be. That’s okay. Our trained volunteers and specialist staff are here to provide non-judgemental, confidential support to families who are going through tough times.
Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, isolated, anxious, or just need someone to talk to, we’re here for you. Our support is tailored to your needs — because no two families are the same, and no one should have to face parenthood alone.

You’re Not Alone
If you or someone you know is struggling with their mental health during or after pregnancy, please reach out. There is no shame in asking for help, and the sooner you do, the sooner things can start to get better.
